In the Hispano-American imagination, the three Marys are the stars forming the belt of the constellation of Orion, the celestial hunter, three saints gathered at the foot of the Cross.
If their identity, through the Gospels and the apocryphal Christian texts, seems uncertain, the Renaissance painters readily identify them with three familiar figures: Mary – mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Mary of Bethany – sister of Lazarus.
Curiously, over the centuries the images of these three women sometimes mingle in the Christian myths, composing a troubling and composite portrait of a single woman at once protective mother and loving disciple, repentant sinner and virtuous penitent.
Three stories, certainly, yet all united by a single word: Love.
