Heinrich Isaac – A Fleming in Florence

Born around 1450, probably on the border between Flanders and Brabant, Heinrich Isaac achieved considerable fame as a composer in the Renaissance, surpassed only by that of Josquin des Prés. Later regarded as the forerunner of Johann Sebastian Bach, the composer exerted a remarkable influence on the German musical tradition thanks to his privileged relationship with the Habsburg dynasty. Yet Isaac lived most of his life in Florence, in the service of the Medici family.
In Isaac, diverse musical styles converge and coexist: the German tradition of the song over a cantus firmus combines with the Italian frottola, the French rondeau, the Dutch song, the Franco-Flemish motets and even Turkish music. Like a colourful, contrasting kaleidoscope, this concert will bring us closer to a musician somewhat forgotten today, despite the immense fame he enjoyed during the Renaissance.

Works by Heinrich Isaac, Guillaume Dufay, Johannes Ockeghem, Bartolomeo degli Organi, Alessandro Coppini, Josquin des Prés…
